Provide world class educational opportunities to Costa Rican families and especially those in underserved communities
Named after the Costa Rican concept of Pura Vida, or the purpose driven life, Pura Vida Education Fund (PVEF) seeks to fund innovative and impactful non-profit educational organizations in Costa Rica. Thus far to date, PVEF has focused on La Paz Community School and Pasitos Day Care.
La Paz Community School was founded in 2007 in order to address socio-cultural gaps prevalent in a region struggling to cope with the balance between an agricultural and tourist economy. Today, La Paz operates across two campuses, serving nearly 500 students from preschool to 12th grade. 60% of students receive financial assistance including 25% who are on scholarship.
La Paz offers a forward thinking model of education:
Students from Costa Rica and all over the world join together to learn how to be creative, multilingual, compassionate and responsible global leaders while engaging in authentic learning experiences focused heavily on developing a students’ sense of place in the world. This is accomplished through experiential and hands on curricular and extra-curricular initiatives.
Pasitos grew out of an entrepreneurial project where local members of the community identified community needs and built projects to address them. Pasitos addresses the need for early childcare and education. It has grown to specifically meet the needs of single mothers and working parents by providing these services for free.
Pasitos welcomes volunteers to provide enrichment for preschool students at a daycare for children of single mothers and working parents. This may include facilitating arts and crafts activities, practicing basic English, and playing with students. For larger groups, there may be opportunities to work on a mural to enliven the space.
